The algae culture project

Currently, Honduras, with a population of 8.8 million people, faces great challenges in the production of clean energy and food.  In order to secure the wellbeing of its population, Honduras must seize the future by planning and developing new and/or innovative technologies. We propose the development of the algae project to produce foods for human and animal consumption and economical energy without damaging the environment. The potential benefits of algae are very substantial. For example, it produces at least ten times as much oil as the next best plant, palm oil, on the same amount of land, and moreover, this can be done on degraded land. We propose to build a center for the study and development of algae on the FunaVid premises. This has been in the planning for over three years and is ready for implementation as soon as funds become available.


19 acres of the available 42 acres of land will be used to produce 220,000 gallons of biodiesel and other products, with a modest investment and enormous economic and academic benefits which will impact upon many generations of Hondurans and Central Americans.

The company IF,LLC has agreed to provide the technology. Five scientists from there will stay in Honduras for six months to train students, professors, and the personnel who will manage the project.


Once the advantages and benefits of this project are demonstrated, further large-scale projects can be developed. These can be financed or directed by NGOs or governments in the Central American region.


Why at FunaVid?


1. FunaVid has been working on designing this project for four years with US scientists from Universities and the Department of Energy, with the very experienced scientist David Haberman of the US company IF,LLC, and CURLA-UNAH from La Ceiba, Honduras. Therefore there is an excellent, well-developed and researched plan ready for immediate execution.


2. FunaVid places a great emphasis on research and teaching. This is greatly facilitated by the existing good relations we have with CURLA-UNAH and an extensive high school teaching program, giving us substantial experience in education.  Each year the best, able students from very poor backgrounds do an internship at FunaVid, paid for by FunaVid and its supporters. Thus they, and CURLA students, will gain from the Algae project to the ultimate benefit of Honduras.


3. Other educational institutions will be invited to benefit from this technology by agreements with the leading entity, FunaVid, but all use of FunaVid facilities is intended to be for the benefit of the people, particularly the poor people of Honduras.


4. FunaVid has many facilities, such as accommodation for students, teachers, other community and industry leaders, and even tourists.  These include individual rooms and dormitories, all with bathrooms, and good kitchen facilities with good staff.


5. FunaVid possesses land suitable to host the project.


6. FunaVid has 9 years experience in environmental conservation, including new forest management techniques, slope cropping, erosion control, coral reef preservation, and flora and fauna conservation. This includes the new, highly successful farming technique of Inga alley cropping. In all this FunaVid has collaborated with several professors from CURLA, demonstrating its ability to innovate and collaborate successfully.


7. Electricity, both solar and hydro, is already installed, as well as clean water from the mountain for both FunaVid and the local community. These necessary resources are presently available to begin onsite construction, proposed future research and maintenance of the project.


8. Agreement has been reached with the technology providers without cost to Honduras.


9. FunaVid will be making a substantial financial contribution to the project (see the Budget section below)


10. FunaVid has verified efficient experience in the administration of financial resources.


11. FunaVid will use naturally occurring algae, not genetically modified (GM) algae, thus eliminating an unforeseen risk to the environment that has currently not been assessed. Also any produce can then be marketed as organic.

The Haberman Report (available on request) calculates that 220,000 gallons of algae oil can be sold for $330,600, and that the annual operating costs will be $171,800.  Hence the project, once established, will be independently viable, and indeed contribute to the work of FunaVid, whether for further promotion or research on algae, or our other charitable activities, such as the promotion of Inga alley cropping or education. Further outside input will not be needed.
